The main character, Ted Lee, turns his back on the life of being a fisherman after the tragic loss of his only child, Rosie, and becomes a painter of local scenes. Having also lost his wife during the birth of Rosie it follows his life through family disputes with his older brothers and sisters and his meeting of the woman he never imagined.
